WoW Forever Naming Rules

What is allowed in a WoW Forever first and last name, split into what Blizzard has confirmed and what beta coverage has reported. Last checked October 29, 2026.

WoW Forever naming rules confirmed by Blizzard

  • Every character has two names: a first name and a second name.
  • The full two-name combination must be distinct within your region, not just within one realm. First names on their own can repeat.
  • Both names are evaluated together, so splitting a restricted word across the first and last name will not necessarily make it valid.
  • Certain names, words, spellings and repeated-character patterns may be restricted, including names that could cause confusion or impersonate Blizzard or the World of Warcraft team.
  • Early Name Reservation runs October 27 through November 3, 2026, first come, first served, for eligible upgrade purchases. Desired names cannot be guaranteed.
  • Under the standing WoW naming policy, character names are 2 to 12 characters, accented letters are supported, and numbers, symbols, spaces and mixed capitals are not allowed.

Reported, not yet confirmed

  • The second name has the same 2 to 12 character limit as the first name.
  • Apostrophes and hyphens are rejected in either part.
  • No character may appear three times in a row.
  • Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Hardcore rulesets share one name pool, so a pair taken on one is taken on all of them.
  • Names of well-known Warcraft characters and in-game titles are refused, and some beta names were force-renamed.
  • Roleplay rulesets expect believable fantasy names rather than puns.

These come from guides and press that covered the Forever beta, such as method.gg and Icy Veins. Treat them as likely, and expect the live game to have the final word.

Length, characters and repeats

Plan each part of the name as one word of letters, between 2 and 12 characters, starting with a capital and with no other capitals inside it. GrozGar fails; Grozgar passes. Accents are fine in either part, but every accent is something other players have to type when they invite you, so one is plenty.

Repeated letters are limited: no character three times in a row. Grozzar is fine, Grozzzar is not. Apostrophes and hyphens, which many classic troll and orc names used, are reported to be rejected, so Zul'jak has to become Zuljak.

Restricted words and uniqueness

Blizzard checks both names together. A blocked word that you split between the first and last name can still be caught, and names that impersonate Blizzard staff or well-known characters can be refused. If a name breaks the rules after creation, the standing policy is a warning, a temporary random name and instructions to pick a new one.

Uniqueness is region-wide and applies to the complete pair. That is the biggest change from classic WoW, where you could escape a taken name by moving to a quieter realm. In Forever the pair you want is either free in your region or it is not, so keep backups ready.

FAQ

Can you use special characters in WoW Forever names?
Accented letters such as é are allowed by the WoW naming policy. Numbers, symbols and spaces are not, and guides covering the beta report that apostrophes and hyphens are rejected too.
Is WoW Forever realmless?
Blizzard describes Forever as realmless. Names are no longer tied to one realm: the full first and last name pair has to be unique across your region.
Can two players have the same first name?
Yes. Uniqueness is checked on the full two-name combination, so first names can repeat as long as the surnames differ.
Does a name that passes these rules mean it is available?
No. These rules tell you whether a name is allowed. Only the game can tell you whether another player already has the same full name, and Blizzard does not offer a public way to check.
How long can a WoW Forever name be?
Each name part is 2 to 12 characters. The first-name limit comes from the standing WoW naming policy; beta coverage reports the same limit for the second name.
Are names unique per realm or per region?
Per region. Blizzard confirmed the full first and last name pair must be distinct within your region, not just one realm.
Can I use capital letters in the middle of a name?
No. Mixed capitals are not allowed, so GrozGar fails and Grozgar passes.
Can a name have three of the same letter in a row?
Beta coverage reports that it cannot. Grozzar is fine; Grozzzar is not.
What happens if my name breaks the rules after creation?
Under the standing policy, a name that breaks the rules can get a warning, a temporary random name and instructions to choose a new one.
Do the rules differ between PvP, RP and Hardcore?
The format rules are the same. Beta coverage reports that all rulesets share one name pool, and RP realms additionally expect believable names.
