Why your surname matters more than your first name

WoW Forever checks names for uniqueness on the full pair, across your whole region. Blizzard confirmed it: your full character name needs to be distinct within the region rather than within one realm. That changes where the competition is. Short, popular first names such as Thrak, Lyra or Brom will be used by thousands of players, and that is allowed. Whether you get the character you want depends on the surname being rare enough to make the pair unique.

A good surname also does more work over time. It identifies you on nameplates unless you hide it, it can be shared by every alt you make, and guilds are already adopting family surnames so their members read as a clan. Choose one you would be happy to see on ten characters, then build first names around it.

Keep spares. Popular surnames such as Stormwind-style place names or the surnames of famous characters will be among the first ones taken, and names that impersonate well-known characters can be refused outright. Generate a list, save three or four favourites in this browser, and check the full pairs against the WoW Forever naming rules before launch.

FAQ

Is a last name required in WoW Forever?
Yes. Every WoW Forever character has a first name and a second name. You can hide the second name from nameplates in the options, but you still have to choose one when you create the character.
Can my alts share the same surname?
Yes. Only the full first and last name pair must be unique in your region, so a family of characters can share one surname as long as each has a different first name.
How long can a WoW Forever surname be?
Guides covering the beta report the same 2 to 12 character limit for the second name as for the first name, letters only, with no apostrophes or hyphens. Blizzard has not published a separate limit for surnames.
Can I pick my surname first and the first name later?
Yes, and it is the smart order in Forever. Generate surnames here, save the ones you like, then use the main generator or your own idea for the first name.
Which surnames are most likely to be taken?
Short, single-image surnames such as Shadow, Storm or Blood compounds, and the surnames of famous characters. Compounds with a less common half are far more likely to be free.
Does the class change the surnames I get?
Yes. Warriors and rogues lean towards weapon words, druids and hunters towards nature words, priests towards family words, and mages and warlocks towards craft and arcane words.
Can I hide my surname in WoW Forever?
Yes. Blizzard confirmed you can hide your second name in the game world through the nameplate options. You still have to choose one at character creation.
Can I use accented letters in a surname?
Accented letters are allowed by the WoW naming policy. Keep it to one, since other players have to type your name to invite you.
Are funny surnames allowed?
Yes, as long as they follow the naming rules. The Funny & troll tone gives joke surnames; the Roleplay ruleset switches back to lore-accurate ones.
Do surnames have to match my race?
Not by rule, but a surname that matches your race reads better. That is why every race in the generator has its own surname roots.
