How two-part names work
Every Forever character has a first name and a second name. Blizzard checks the full combination for uniqueness across your region rather than inside one realm, so a popular first name is fine as long as the surname makes the pair yours. You can hide the second name in the game world, but you still have to choose one.
Both names are checked together against the naming rules: letters only, no numbers, symbols or spaces, and nothing split across the two parts to sneak a blocked word through. The WoW Forever naming rules page covers every limit, and the surname generator gives you last names on their own.
FAQ
- Which race has the easiest names to get in WoW Forever?
- At launch, the Skyborne, because there are no famous Skyborne names to copy yet. For every race, a less common surname is what keeps your pair free.
- Which races are Alliance and which are Horde?
- Alliance: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome and High Order Skyborne. Horde: Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll and Windshaper Skyborne.
- Do all races use the same name style?
- No. Each race has its own syllables and surname roots, from hard orc clan names to long night elf names and airy Skyborne names.
- Can I use a name from one race on another?
- The rules allow it, but a name that matches your race reads better to other players. The race pages generate names in each race style.
- Do Skyborne have their own names?
- Yes. Both Skyborne branches get airy elven first names; High Order surnames use arcane and sky roots, Windshaper surnames use wind and flight.
- Are the example names on this page available?
- They pass the naming rules, but we cannot see which names other players have taken. Treat them as ideas and keep backups.
- Can I see more names for one race?
- Yes. Open the race page for a generator set to that race and a list of 30 name ideas.
- How long can each name be?
- Each part is 2 to 12 characters, letters only, with no capitals in the middle of a name.
- Can my characters of different races share a surname?
- Yes. Only the full first and last name pair must be unique, so characters of any race can share a surname.
- Which races are new or changed in WoW Forever?
- The Skyborne are new. Guides covering the beta also report new race and class pairings, such as the orc mage, troll warlock, dwarf shaman, gnome priest, human hunter and undead paladin.
